Tafsir of Suratul Tahrim Qur'an Chapter 66 verses 6 to 12.

Suratul Tahrim is the last of the ten-short chapters revealed in madinah.

Topics in the Chapter

  • Making one’s spouse his/her confidant
  • Protection of one’s life and the family: Socially, morally and spiritually
"O you who believe! save yourselves and your families from a fire whose fuel is men and stones; over it are angels stern and strong, they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and do as they are commanded" (66:6). This advice is to all members of the family be it: The father, Mother, Children, and relatives.
  • No excuse for the infidels
"It will be said in the Hereafter) O you who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah - Islâmic Monotheism)! Make no excuses this Day! You are being requited only for what you used to do." (66:7)
  • Sincere Repentance
"O you who believe! turn to Allah a sincere turning; maybe your Lord will remove from you your evil and cause you to enter gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the day on which Allah will not abase the Prophet and those who believe with him; their light shall run on before them and on their right hands; they shall say: Our Lord! make perfect for us our light, and grant us protection, surely Thou hast power over all things." (66:8)
  • Being Strict with the unbelievers & Hypocrites
"O Prophet! strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and be hard against them; and their abode is hell; and evil is the resort." (66:9)
  • Every soul is the bearer of his or her own burden
Staying with the righteous will not guarantee admission to paradise, but can influence one actions."Allah sets forth an example to those who disbelieve the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut: they were both under two of Our righteous servants, but they acted treacherously towards them so they availed them naught against Allah, and it was said: Enter both the fire with those who enter." (66:10)

Also, staying with criminals can’t affect one’s deen and deeds. "And Allah has set forth an example for those who believe, the wife of Fir'aun (Pharaoh), when she said: "My Lord! Build for me a home with You in Paradise, and save me from Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his work, and save me from the people who are Zâlimûn (polytheists, wrong-doers and disbelievers in Allah). " (66:11)
For a detailed commentary of this verse, read "The Disbelievers can cause no Harm to the Believers"
  • Rewards of being righteous
"And Maryam, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her of Our inspiration and she accepted the truth of the words of her Lord and His books, and she was of, the obedient ones." (66:12)

Conclusion

Brothers in Islaam: Do we have aspirations to call our family to Allah? Is there a level that we wish to reach in terms of our men and women?

Yes, we wish that when we look at our family we would see in them qualities mentioned by Allah the Exalted : "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward." [QUR’AAN 33:35]

Whenever these attributes are realized in our homes and families, we would reach the goal that is spoken of and would have completed the task and goal.

Some would ask that if one accomplishes this, should they then lay the proverbial stick down, and relax from the hardships of calling them? The answer is no, until we and our families place our first steps in Paradise. That is true relaxation and everlasting bliss and happiness.
